Scouts Honor

Austin has been a Cub Scout since he turned 8, but we didn't really go at first. As time went by, Austin decided he wanted to be more a part of it, and began asking to go more. These last 3 months or so, he has been going regularly, and really enjoys it. He has scouts three mondays a month. He meets with 3 other boys and two leaders and learns new things- like how to make a birdhouse, how to set a table and a lot more. His leaders are great people, and I think this will be a terrific experience for him.

Last night was the yearly Blue & Gold Banquet. This dinner honors the scouts and thier families. Austin was very proud as he served each of us our dinners. After dinner, we got to go outside for a special American Flag retirement ceremony. I had never seen this done before. The scouts stood in salute and the rest of us with hands at our hearts. It was a very reverent and touching experience as the flag burned away. Austin, unlike his brother, never showed any special interest in being patriotic, however when the ceremony was done, Austin broke out in tears. He apparently didn't fully understand what was happening. As he cried on daddys shoulder, I could see a glimpse of heaven as he began to explain to us that we aren't supposed to burn the flag. That it is special and no one should ruin it. We explained to him why we do that and that it would be worst if we flew a torn and tattered flag. It took several times to help him see it was ok and that we were respectful in what we did.

Austin is proud to be a Scout, and I look forward to seeing him grow, learn and serve others with his whole heart.

How awesome! Isaac has had a ton of great experiences with scouts too. John goes with him every week. MJ is in Girl Scouts as well. And John just got called as the Cub Master - the guy who runs the monthly pack meetings. I think we're becoming quite the scout family. :)
